The legend goes, that lord Ganesha was brought into life by his mother Goddess Parvati, to ensure none enter her celestial abode. Lord Ganesha in his sincerity denied entry to his own father Lord Shiva. An enraged Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha. However Lord Shiva relented and replaced Ganesha’s head with that of an elephant. Ganesha was blessed by all gods and goddessess with divine powers.
Lord Ganesha is known to remove hurdles of life. Any ritual or celebration begins only after invoking Lord Ganesha’s blessings. The festival is celebrated with zeal and devotion. People celebrate Ganesh chaturthi as a five-day or eleven-day ritual. People bring Lord Ganesha’s idol home, perform puja with scrumptious offerings and immerse him in water (nimarjana) after the stipulated period.
