Janmashtami is the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth. Main celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami takes place at midnight as Krishna is said to have made his divine appearance in that hour. Fasting, bhajans, pujas and many other rituals mark janmashtami celebrations in India. Devotees queue all the major Krishna temples to seek his blessings. They keep day long fast. Functions and prayer meetings are organized to share the glory of the God. The general pooja begins early in the morning with devotees giving a bath or abhishek to balgopal’s idol with gangajal, ghee, water, honey and curd. The idol is then decorated with new clothes (preferably in yellow color) stone or other precious jewelry. The festival of janmashtami is observed with lot of gay and happiness all over India. The Rasa Lila is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and commemorate his love for Radha. Sweets made of milk and other dairy products, especially butter, are traditionally prepared on this occasion. Ladies draw patterns of little children's feet outside the house with rice-flour paste, walking towards the house. This symbolizes the entry of the infant Krishna into his foster-home. This custom is popular in some communities of South India. Morning prayers and worship, the devotes break their fast with Prasadam, food that has first been offered to God. The temples at Vrindavan and Mathura witness a colorful, even boisterous celebration on this occasion, and festivities at these places may extend for several days.
